Old Motor Advertising

Last September, a fire on King Street (good set of photos here) in the Laundromat next to the King St Cyclery revealed (after demolition) an old advertisement on the side of the cyclery building. It was a great looking blast from the past - until of course it got tagged by some tossers a couple of days later.
As it was briefly

As if that wasn't insult enough, once the now empty block was put on the market, someone thought it would be a great idea to paint over the wall altogether, leaving yet another invitation to tagger morons. Sydney music enthusiast Greg Poppleton has been following the story of this old ad on his blog; which I recommend anyone interested in this story read. He even spotted a potential culprit for the second crime in this post !

Happily - all is not lost, and it appears the wall will be recreated at the Motor Life Museum at Albion Park. Credit to Greg Poppleton for chasing this up and ensuring this little piece of history will remain in some form. Check out the full story here.

Something special...

Word in Hand plays host to a massively chewy treat when spoken word legend Tug Dumbly fires up the Barbie to unleash his Banjo Paterson award winning epic ode to meat Barbeque Bill and the Roadkill Café.

Tug’s tale pits the locals of a sleepy north coast hamlet famed for its magnificent meat up against a horde of nefarious New Age invaders, whose plans for remodeling the town include the removal of the famed Big Steak, as well as stifling the trade of the town’s most celebrated son Barbeque Bill – it’s cleavers at ten paces!!

Introducing Newtown What's On

I'm hoping to start a regular what's on guide to Newtown on this site. Ideally posting every Wednesday in time for the (extended) weekend, covering one off concerts as well as regular events, art exhibitions, book shop readings e.t.c.

In order for this to work I'm going to need help from you; especially if you own or run a venue or know someone who does. If you have a weekly mailing list, please add the mayor to your list. If not, please email me early in the week with what events you're running during the week.

And I'll be fairly generous with my definition of Newtown - Enmore and Erko definitely rate, Marrickville depending on my mood; Surry Hills and the CBD - no chance !

My email address is mayorofnewtown 'at' gmail.com.

Have a look at a skeleton what's on here. Looking forward to some feedback.
