Mystery Photo VIII Revealed - Lost Balloon

The most recent Mystery Photo asked you to identify the location of the Sydney Festival yellow balloon. It wasn't too long until 'anonymous' (please leave a name; even a made up on - it's much more fun !) picked it as the empty block of land next to the Scientology School on Oxford St Newtown.

Since the photo was taken last year, the long abandoned site has undergone quite a change, and it looks like some sort of community garden is coming to life here; a quick google check reveals that's the case (via an Athena newsletter). Does anyone have any more information ?

Although the area where the ball was is still looking pretty crappy.

  1. Special Scientology vegetables, I presume?

  2. Scary concept ! According to the Athena newsletter, they are being allowed to use the gardens, which suggest it's not their property. I seem to remember reading the churh kept that land when they sold the school to the loonies.

  3. I think they are catholic vegetables and the garden is a St Joseph's initiative. A quick call to the parish could probably confirm.

  4. Thanks to PureAndApplied for the link for the Community Garden DA. It is indeed the run by St Joseph's

  5. I am the current treasurer of this garden organisation. Just to fill you in. This garden is an initiative of residents in the streets around the Oxford Street area. The land has very generously been leased to us by St Joseph's (you are right, this bit still belongs to them). Yes the Athena School has a plot (one out of 24 or so). A plot has been offered to Australia Street Infants School and St Joseph's has a communal plot too. But as I said this is residents thing first and for most.
